In a major boost for future pilots, Jet2.com has launched a fully funded pilot training programme - a first for the UK leisure airline.
The Jet2FlightPath initiative opens the door to a commercial flying career without the traditional six-figure training cost.
Applications opened today (13 May 2025) and will remain open for just three weeks, making now the time to act for those with a passion for aviation.
✈️ What Is Jet2FlightPath?
Jet2FlightPath is a zero to ATPL training programme that provides up to 60 successful applicants with completely funded flight training through one of three leading Approved Training Organisations (ATOs):
FTEJerez
Leading Edge Aviation
Skyborne Airline Academy
The 18-month course will prepare cadets to join Jet2.com as Second Officers, flying Boeing or Airbus aircraft from one of the airline’s 13 UK bases.
Jet2.com currently employs 1,800 pilots and operates a fleet of 135 aircraft.
🚀 Why This Matters
Jet2.com CEO Steve Heapy explains:
“We know that the cost of training is an obstacle to many people who dream of becoming a commercial airline pilot, so we are very proud to announce this groundbreaking programme… helping many wonderful flying careers take off.”
This is not just an investment in future pilots, it’s a bold move toward widening access and diversifying the flight deck.
🇬🇧 vs 🇺🇸 How Jet2FlightPath Compares with the FAA's 1,500-Hour Rule
Jet2FlightPath reflects a competency-based training model, where cadets can become airline pilots through a structured, highly supervised programme without needing to build 1,500 hours first, unlike the system in the United States.
In the U.S., aspiring airline pilots must log 1,500 hours of flight time before qualifying for an Air Transport Pilot (ATP) certificate. However, many aviation experts, including us at Yaw Aviation, believe this time-based requirement is outdated and does not necessarily correlate with safety or competence.
We covered this issue in depth in our article:👉 Why 1,500 Hours Doesn’t Guarantee a Safer Pilot – And What We Should Do Instead
Jet2.com’s approach demonstrates a more modern, training-focused model that prioritizes quality over raw flight hours giving candidates structured experience in real world airline environments, not just hours in a logbook.
